Ulcerative colitis (UC)

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that causes chronic inflammation of the colon and rectum, resulting in symptoms such as diarrhea, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, and weight loss.[8]

It is estimated that approximately 6.8 million people worldwide have ulcerative colitis.[9] The cause of ulcerative colitis is not fully understood, but it is believed to be a result of an abnormal immune response in genetically susceptible individuals.11 Several factors, such as genetics, environmental factors, and gut microbiota, have been implicated in the development of ulcerative colitis.11 Treatment options include medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs, immunosuppressants, and biologics, as well as surgery in some cases.[10]

However, despite therapy patients with UC continue to use corticosteroids and experience insufficient disease control. There is still an unmet medical need for more effective and personalized therapies, as current treatments can have limited efficacy and significant side effects.[11]

At Galapagos, we recognize the urgent need for better treatments for ulcerative colitis.
