Planet

We are conscientious. The health of the planet and the health of people are linked. We have set a clear goal to become carbon neutral by 2028.

Less is more

Our 5-year roadmap

We have defined a 5-year roadmap to become carbon neutral by 2028, using a robust and credible mix of carbon reduction and offset projects. We are also committed to the circular economy, reducing waste and reusing or recycling materials where and when we can.

Because reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a critical success factor in our approach, our reduction roadmap includes three pathways. These include initiatives to:

Systematically replace all fossil fuels with renewable energy sources used in our buildings and car fleet

Improve the energy efficiency of our operations

Drive behavioral change and raising environmental awareness among our employees

Built to last

BREEAM and WELL

We seek BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) and WELL (eco-friendly initiative focusing on human health and welfare enterprise) certification for our new buildings.

Built to last

The Finch Building (Oegstgeest, NL)

For example, in Oegstgeest, the Netherlands, we achieved BREEAM Excellent and a WELL Gold certification for our new building, and our garden features native plants, trees, shrubs, as well as beehives and insect hotels.

Raising awareness, driving change

Green teams

At our research sites in Mechelen, Romainville and Leiden, we have established Green Teams that look for opportunities to reduce the footprint of our daily operations by promoting behavioral change initiatives.

Our carbon footprint

Carbon neutral by 2028

Our approach is planned, consistent, transparent, and measurable. In 2022, we have defined the carbon footprint of our value chain. In 2023, we will disclose this footprint and will apply for long-term science-based targets.

These targets are supported by key performance indicators, such as CO2 emissions defined as Scope 11, Scope 22, Scope 33 and relevant waste management KPIs in our goal to consistently reduce our environmental footprint.

In addition, our Environmental, Health and Safety Oversight Group has developed an EHS management system based on the international standards ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.

Sustainability

Our commitment

As a company, we firmly believe that we have to embrace new ways to move “Forward, Sustainably”.
