David Schoonens believes that innovation is the cornerstone of effective HR management. He emphasizes the importance of leveraging technology to streamline processes and enhance employee experiences. According to David, “The future of HR lies in our ability to adapt and integrate new technologies that can automate routine tasks, allowing HR professionals to focus on strategic initiatives that drive organizational growth.”

To achieve this, Galapagos wants to implement an advanced HR software that not only automates administrative tasks but also provides data-driven insights to support decision-making. This technological integration has resulted in improved efficiency and a more personalized approach to employee management.

The Role of AI in Transforming HR

One of the most exciting aspects of David’s strategy is the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into HR practices. He states, “AI is a game-changer for HR. It allows us to analyze vast amounts of data quickly, identify trends, and make informed decisions that benefit both the employees and the organization.”

With artificial intelligence, large data pools can be turned quicker into meaningful data, helping out HR functions, including recruitment and performance management

Galapagos wants to use AI to enhance various HR functions, including recruitment, performance management, and employee engagement. For instance, AI-driven tools help in identifying the best candidates by analyzing their resumes and matching them with job requirements more accurately than traditional methods. This not only speeds up the hiring process but also ensures a better fit between the candidate and the company.

Balancing AI and the Human Touch

Despite the significant advantages of AI, David is keenly aware of the need to maintain a human touch in HR. He notes, “While AI can handle data and automate processes, the human element is irreplaceable. Empathy, emotional intelligence, and personal interaction are crucial aspects of HR that technology cannot replicate. These are the skills that will make a difference for people when they get in touch with the HR department. And that will not change.”

AI should handle the data-driven aspects of HR, allowing HR professionals to focus on building relationships, understanding employee needs, and fostering a supportive work environment

David emphasizes that AI should be used to complement human efforts, not replace them. At Galapagos, AI handles the data-driven aspects of HR, allowing HR professionals to focus on building relationships, understanding employee needs, and fostering a supportive work environment. “The goal is to create a harmonious balance where technology enhances human capabilities, leading to a more efficient and empathetic HR practice,” he explains.

Prioritizing Employee Well-being

A significant part of Galapagos’ HR strategy revolves around fostering a healthy work environment. He highlights the importance of mental health and work-life balance, noting that “happy employees are productive employees.” Galapagos has introduced several wellness programs, including flexible working hours, mental health support, and fitness initiatives, to ensure that employees feel valued and supported.

David explains, “We want our employees to thrive both professionally and personally. By investing in their well-being, we are not only enhancing their productivity but also building a loyal and motivated workforce.”

He emphasizes continuous learning and development as key components of resilience. “We encourage our employees to pursue lifelong learning and provide them with the resources they need to upskill and reskill. This not only prepares them for future challenges but also fosters a culture of innovation and growth,” he explains.
